The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the top division and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck on two occasions from corners in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the tally a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's side into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton stay in 14th position and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in duties at both ends of pitch

Following a uninspiring weekday performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a mere attempts on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and supporters headed to the gates after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had netted only one league goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having space and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, as well, failed to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: The team head to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 8 PM.
