Trump’s latest warning to introduce an extra 100% tariff on items imported from China has been described as a “prime illustration” of American hypocrisy, per the Chinese government.

A official from China’s Commerce Ministry also stated that the nation could enact its own unrevealed “responsive actions” if the White House occupant executes his warning, adding that the country was “unafraid” of a possible commercial battle.

Last Friday, Donald Trump responded at Beijing’s move to tighten its regulations for exports of rare earths, accusing Beijing of “becoming very hostile” and attempting to hold the global community “under its control”.

He also warned to cancel a scheduled talks with China’s President President Xi, which was expected to take place during a summit in the Republic of Korea later this month.

The former president’s remarks on that day unsettled global markets, with the benchmark US stock index closing down 2.7%, marking its steepest fall since earlier this year.

The president’s words revived concerns of a commercial dispute between the two economic giants.

Earlier this year, the respective governments had reached an agreement to drop triple-digit tariffs on each other’s products, which had raised the prospect of trade halting between the two nations.

As a result, United States levies on products from China incurring an additional thirty percent tariff compared with the beginning of 2025, while items from the United States entering the Chinese market are subject to a import levy.

China’s latest remarks – published by the relevant government department in the form of written responses to media inquiries – echoed language from the peak of the recent trade conflict.

The remarks condemned US export restrictions on chips and semi-conductors while supporting Beijing’s overseas sale regulations on rare earth minerals as “standard procedures” to ensure domestic safety and that of the global community.

The spokesperson said that for “many years”, the US had “broadened the definition” of domestic safety, misused foreign shipment regulations and “enforced” discriminatory practices against Beijing.

“Resorting to import duty warnings is not the correct approach to engage with China,” the spokesperson commented.

“China’s position on a import duty dispute has always been consistent: we are not seeking one, but we are fearless of one.”

Recently, China declared it was tightening overseas sale regulations on rare earth minerals and additional substances vital for cutting-edge industry.

This move was regarded as a important measure, as the country processes about ninety percent of the world’s rare earths, which are used in items such as photovoltaic modules and mobile phones.

The recent comments from both governments are being viewed by some as a means of bolstering negotiating stances prior to upcoming negotiations.

Remains uncertain whether a meeting between Trump and Xi Jinping, scheduled at a conference in Seoul later this month, will take place as planned.
