A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key government projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its duties in national projects. They were completed at an accelerated pace, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an prompt suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these national projects.
