An Kindness of Unknown Individuals: How a Gentleman I Had Just Met Assisted Me Obtain the Job That Transformed My Existence

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a backpacking trip to Europe with a travel partner. Since my friend was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in the Big Apple, we had booked a two-week stay there en route to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a large multi-story edifice on the UWS known as International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I explained that I had just graduated with a degree in science and had been conducting research using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an microscopy facility at the institution – close to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I consider applying for a job with them. I laughed it off, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, returning to the canteen that evening. The man from Iraq approached me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Given that he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off told my host that I was without a work permit, so I was probably wasting her time.

As is common in NYC – a city where anything feels possible – she responded: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

I never saw that student again and I can't recall his name, but his remarkable generosity altered my destiny in so many ways. I didn't possess the confidence or self-belief to reach out at an prestigious college and seek a position. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that free tuition.

Perhaps most importantly, that role at the university resulted in a position in Switzerland where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
